BM: You mentioned that you actually wrote some songs in the studio, and you mentioned “This Close” and I believe I have heard that you wrote that song. Could you tell me what frame of mind you were in when you wrote it and what the song means for you?
PS: I actually wrote the first verse and the chorus to that song years and years ago, and I was alone in my bedroom in my parents’ house, and I was just kind of playing it, and I was like, this song is silly, I won’t show the band, and fast-forward to last year I had a little more confidence, I guess, and everyone was like, ‘anybody got some songs?’ and I was like, I do! Lacey wrote lyrics to the second verse. I always have problems writing second verses. My mind… gives up after verse one and a chorus.
BM: Did you write any other songs for the album?
PS: “Tiny Heart” is one of mine. “Missing” is another one, and I wrote a good deal of the music of “Beautiful Bride,” but all of the lyrics are Lacey’s in that one. By writing music I would come up with [some sounds] and Sameer would come up with another part, and we would just mash them all together.
